How Is Net Salary Calculated?
Your gross salary is what your employer agrees to pay you. Your net salary — take-home pay — is what actually lands in your bank account after taxes and other deductions. The gap between the two can be surprisingly large. Understanding what gets deducted and why helps you budget accurately and avoid surprises when your first paycheck arrives.
Gross vs Net Salary
Gross salary is your total compensation before any deductions — the number in your employment contract. Net salary is what remains after federal income tax, state income tax (where applicable), Social Security, Medicare, and any voluntary deductions like health insurance or retirement contributions.
In the US, the typical difference between gross and net is 20%–35%, depending on your income level, state of residence, and benefit elections. How Federal Income Tax Withholding Works
